The gameplay also tends towards the pastoral, which is less laudable. The game takes place in gorgeous-looking surroundings, beautifully depicted in a near photorealistic style, which serves to render the dark goings-on that you encounter – and the confusion and mental instability that Giulia’s inner monologue exposes – even more powerful.
The twin’s father is a general in the German army, and the mother seems to be something of a tyrant as the game progresses, the war comes ever closer and affects what unfolds with increasing intensity. Martha Is Dead certainly isn’t a game for the squeamish or the young, but it’s certainly thought-provoking: especially when the various themes that run through it begin to unfold. Some of the latter are so dark that Martha Is Dead has actually been censored on the PlayStation 4 and 5, somewhat disappointingly since, while they involve corpse mutilation and gynaecology, they do make sense in the context of what is going on inside Giulia’s head, and the game makes it very clear when it flips from reality into the world of nightmares. What ensues is a very clever, beautifully written psychological study flecked with twists, red herrings, and nightmarish dream sequences.
